seastack
no water treatment, no grid dependency
SeaStack is Latent Drive’s next-generation electrolysis platform, designed to produce green hydrogen directly from seawater, concentrated brines and wastewater streams.
Conventional electrolysers require ultra-high-purity water, adding cost, energy use and infrastructure through desalination and purification. SeaStack is being developed to remove this barrier by using abundant non-potable water sources.
By reducing dependence on freshwater, SeaStack could unlock hydrogen production in coastal, offshore and water-constrained regions.
WHY IT MATTERS
Freshwater availability is becoming a growing constraint on the expansion of green hydrogen.
Many of the world’s best renewable energy resources are located in coastal regions where seawater is abundant but freshwater is scarce. SeaStack addresses this challenge by enabling direct hydrogen production from alternative water sources, reducing infrastructure requirements and environmental impact.
demonstrated under real-world conditions
SeaStack has been successfully demonstrated at Portland Port, UK, producing hydrogen directly from:
- Seawater
- Concentrated brine
- Treated municipal wastewater effluent
Hydrogen Production Without Freshwater Limits
SeaStack has the potential to enable hydrogen production in locations where freshwater is limited, costly or unavailable.
Potential applications include:
- Coastal hydrogen production
- Offshore renewable energy
- Ports and harbours
- Desalination plants
- Industrial brine streams
- Wastewater treatment works
- Remote and island communities
